MODULE #1 – INVESTOR PSYCHOLOGY, GETTING TO KNOW THE INVESTOR IN YOU

The results are in. Year after year it is well documented that self-directed investors under perform their respective equity and fixed income benchmarks. However, all is not lost and you can overcome this phenomenon. However, we need to address a topic that is not widely covered in the markets. This particular topic is Investor Psychology. Investor Psychology affects how an investor’s portfolio performs because investing decisions are directly linked to emotions. Key discussion topics covered with regards to Investor Psychology include fear, greed, ego’s biases, patience, etc

In Module#1 we will explore Investor Psychology and key emotions that will be triggered at some point in an investor’s career. By recognizing what these emotions are, we will then dive into what we call the “Contributing Factors”. These factors are the various comments that tug on our Investor Psychology week to week, month to month, year to year. Key discussion topics associated with Contributing Factors  include what vs why, technical vs fundamentals, the Financial Media, Forecasting, Analysis Paralysis, etc.

At Riverside, our methodology for navigating the markets has been specifically configured to reduce emotions associated with making investment decisions.

We wrap up Module #1 by discussing basic asset classes and Historical Portfolio Theory.

MODULE #2 – PORTFOLIO METHODOLOGY OVERVIEW

To start Module #2, we review key concepts discussed in Module #1 including Investor Psychology and Contributing Factors. Next, we will build off of these concepts to start to develop a baseline for personalized portfolio construction.

Using some simple concepts, we will refine asset buckets based on allocation type, investor age and risk tolerance. Based these asset buckets, we review a total of 10 Simple Asset Allocation Strategies to aid in managing the assets in the portfolio. We will dive deeper into common Portfolio Metrics to better understand common performance and management measures.

Key discussion topics in Module #2 include Time Frames, Asset Allocation Types, Diversification, Re-Balancing, Benchmarks, Correlations, Risk Adjusted Returns, etc.

MODULE #3 – TECHNICAL INDICATOR OVERVIEW

In this module we dive into the technical indicators we use at Riverside Analytics and how they can be used in a Portfolio setting.  We will detail our favorite method’s of analysis including, trend following, relative strength, momentum, and market breadth.

We will expand on the 10 strategies introduced in Module #2,  and explore 5 additional strategies.  These strategies can be transacted in both US and Canadian currencies.

MODULE #4 – BUILDING YOUR INVESTMENT PLAN

MODULE #4 is where the rubber hits the pavement and we gain the necessary traction to implement a personalized investment plan.

Before we dive into the framework of Building Your investment Plan, we shall add a few more investment strategies to the toolbox, to give you a total of 16 strategies to choose from. These strategies can be used in isolation or in tandem with each other.

The knowledge accumulated in the Investor Master Class up to the mid-point of Module #4 will be summarized into a simple concise package as we show you how create a sample investment strategy that can work for you. In the class we construct a sample investment strategy.

However, is constructing a plan all that is needed to successfully navigate the markets? At Riverside, we have over 50-years of investing experience in varying market conditions. We know that while having a plan in place is key to longer term success, this plan cannot be successful without sticking to that plan.

The final segment in the Investor Master Class we will continue to explore the realm of Investor Psychology as it applies to navigating Market Draw Downs and understanding how a strategy ACTUALLY works in the market. Specifically, we review how the strategy will transact both entries and exits over varying market conditions.
